Welcome back to school!
I hope each of you had a very relaxing summer break. Since the departure of students back in May, our principals, district leadership team members, maintenance crews, transportation team, school nutrition department, custodial staff, and other support personnel have been working very long hours in preparation for the new academic year. All campuses have received upgrades to enhance safety and security. Several campuses have received carpet replacement, new floors, additional classroom space, and other major improvements.
Our Board of Education has continued their strong commitment to school safety and security as evidenced by recent policy implementation to support crisis response measures that extent beyond normal lockdown procedures. As a result of intensive training in partnership with local, state and federal agencies, School Crisis Response Teams are now occupying all schools and central services throughout the Laurens County School System. Additionally, the Board of Education, in partnership with the Laurens County Commissioners, allocated funding for three additional School Resource Officers in our system, doubling the number of SROs in LCSS. Video cameras have been installed at each school.
In preparation for the return of students, intensive professional development has occurred throughout the summer for teachers and administrators. We celebrated a very successful summer literacy initiative in partnership with Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. Our Human Resources Department, under the leadership of Dr. Phillip Greeson has been working diligently to recruit and secure new employees while our Transportation and School Nutrition Departments make strides to improve the operational efficiency and auxiliary services for our children. Our Finance Department has implemented an electronic reporting system that will eliminate paperwork, improve turnaround time for payroll, and ensure accuracy of reporting time and attendance. These are only a few of the numerous improvements made in our district over the past several months.
With the excitement of a new year, there are also feelings of anxiety and stress among staff, students and parents as each prepares for the year ahead. Thank you in advance for your efforts to foster a nurturing, welcoming climate for all students as they embark on a new experience with us on August 8th. I feel certain this is going to be the best year ever for all students, staff and members of our school communities. I wish each of you a very safe and successful academic year!
Dr. Dan Brigman, Superintendent
Laurens County School System
“The chief beauty about time
is that you cannot waste it in advance.
The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you,
as perfect, as unspoiled,
as if you had never wasted or misapplied
a single moment in all your life.
You can turn over a new leaf every hour
if you choose.”
