Laurens County SkillsUSA Chapters Attend Fall Leadership

SkillsUSA Chapters from East and West Laurens High School attended Fall Leadership Conference at Jekyll Island on October 22-24, 2015. SkillsUSA Georgia hosts a Fall Leadership Conference each year to train students and teachers in leadership skills that will allow them to go back to their school and lead their local chapters through a successful school year. SkillsUSA Georgia advisors were encouraged to bring their local officers and any other students interested in learning how to demonstrate their leadership abilities. This year’s event had 900 attendees from all over the state.  Students participated in sessions that guide them in developing team building, public speaking, communication and community service skills, just to name a few. While at the conference the students also participated in a STEAM race challenge where students from each chapter built a soap box derby style car and competed against other chapters.

East Laurens received awards for Chapter Image Award, Statesman Award; Daphinie Ford, Kaylon Marion, and Cameron Thompson, Distinguished Statesman Award; Eve Pike, Best Car Design Award, Best Costume Design, Chapter of Excellent recognition, as well as recognition for individual students leading the breakout session.

West Laurens received the award for Best Car Construction in the STEAM Challenge.
