Important Information Regarding Revised Promotion/Retention Policy for 3rd/5th/8th Grade Students

DEAR SWLE PARENT/GUARDIAN,

The Laurens County Board of Education has revised its Promotion/Retention Policy for 3rd, 5th, and 8th grade students.  While Georgia Law requires all students to be tested in grades 3-8 on the Milestones, that one test will no longer determine if a child is retained.  HOWEVER, the child's performance on the test continues to be important as it is one of several factors considered together to determine if a child is ready to move to the next grade level.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact the school as always.

NEW PROCEDURE FOR PARENTS THIS YEAR

Beginning Monday, August 14, 2017, we will begin adhering to the Visitor's Pass policy in the mornings. Please see page 22 of the student handbook for clarification.

Pre-K children will be escorted in a group to their HR by a staff member. Other children will report either to the lunchroom for breakfast or to the gym.

Please say your goodbyes in the Commons/Rotunda Area. If you need to see the teacher, please go into the office with your photo ID and obtain a Visitor's Pass. For safety reasons for our children, we must know who is in our building and why. As we begin this on Monday, August 14, we will have a temporary Visitor's Pass table in the Commons.

Thank you for your help in keeping SWLE a safe environment for all the children.

Advice from Demaryous "Bay Bay" Thomas

A Message from Demaryius Thomas to all Laurens County students:
(Wide Receiver for the Denver Broncos #88 and former WL Raider)

"I just want to say live and love life. Have as much fun as you can and take everyday one at a time. Enjoy your friends, the teachers, coaches, etc... because they are there to help you and want the best for you. But while having fun make sure your book work and grades are your number 1 priority. Be respectful to everybody. Say "yes sir" "and "yes ma'am" because it will get you a long way. I still say "yes sir" and "yes ma'am" today and it's made me who I am. If you ever need help or need someone to talk to you have your parents, your teachers, and coaches. I talked to everybody when I needed help or something was wrong with me. And it helped me be the man I am today. Never let anyone tell you something you can't do. Nobody can make that decision but you. With that also stayed prayed up. With prayer nobody can hold you back. I love all of you!!!"     ..........  Demaryius Thomas

BAY BAY DAY AT SWLE

Georgia Schools' Parent Survey

State of Georgia mandates that a school must have its PARENTS complete an online climate survey.  It's that time of year and we NEED your help! The survey is below. Please click the link and take the survey for each child you have enrolled in an LCSS school. The survey should take no more than about ten minutes. If you do not have internet available at  home, please come into our school one day this week  before Thanksgiving holidays to complete the survey. The results of this survey impact our annual CCRPI score that replaced AYP. Thank you in advance for your help with this!

World School Milk Day

World School Milk Day 2015 Announcement

Got Milk?

Did you know that schools in over 40 countries around the world will celebrate
the 16th anniversary of World School Milk Day on Wednesday, September 30th? The Food and Agriculture Organization created World School Milk Day to focus attention on school milk with celebrations in countries around the globe highlighting the health benefits of milk on the last Wednesday in September each year. Milk in all flavors is a Powerhouse Beverage and a great source of natural fuel for the body – milk provides the power of protein to build muscles, calcium and vitamin D for strong bones and teeth, potassium to keep the heart healthy, along with five other important vitamins and minerals needed every day!

Southwest Laurens Elementary will be joining in on this 16th anniversary celebration with our very own World School Milk Day celebration.  We ask that you celebrate with us! Don’t forget your milk at breakfast and lunch not just on World School Milk Day, but each day!

All books have been carefully reviewed and approved for young readers. This fair will take place the same week as the Grandparents' Breakfast, so we encourage our grandparents to stop by the library with his/her grandchild after eating breakfast to view the selection of books! You may also get a sneak peak or order online (if you can't make the Book Fair) by visiting the
                                             ONLINE BOOKFAIR.

Thank You!

Dear Southwest Laurens Family,

As you already know, SWLE is an amazing school where outstanding students, your children, grow and develop! One of the highlights of my professional career has been serving as the principal of Southwest Laurens Elementary. I have LOVED every minute of the past five plus years. Being a part of this dynamic and diverse community has been a blessing and a privilege. You have supported our educational efforts and have been willing to work with me and this wonderful staff in creating a “family friendly” environment.

Therefore, I have mixed emotions about my decision to accept a new challenge in my career. I will be moving to the Laurens County Board office to take on the role of Director of Federal Programs and Testing Coordinator for the system. I know that I am turning over the reins of this outstanding school to a great leader in Dr. Aurelia Tippett. Your children will continue to be in great hands.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of working with your precious children. I will miss their smiling faces each morning, their excitement of what the day may bring, and especially their loving hugs. Whenever I needed a lift from the grind of paperwork, all I had to do was walk down the hall or to the lunchroom and I was reminded why I chose this profession.

The past years have been filled with great memories and many laughs. This Dr. Seuss quote will guide me in the next few weeks, “Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened”

Thank you for all your support and the opportunity to be the principal of such a great school!!!

With warm regards,

Kelland Waldrep

If an emergency change must take place, someone will have to come to the school to provide a written statement for the change.  Otherwise, students should bring a WRITTEN statement on the morning of a needed transportation change. The statement must include the student’s name, the address where the student is to go that afternoon, a contact phone number and must be signed by a parent or guardian.

We regret that this change is necessary, but there is no way to verify the person on the other end of the phone has the authority to make changes in the student’s transportation. Our number one priority is the safety of your children. It is our responsibility to make sure your child arrives at the correct destination each afternoon. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a call.
